In all of the above considerations a consistent deterministic approach has been applied. This means that all variables – material properties, phase distribution, local discontinuities and their interactions – were treated as 36 Composites and multiphase materials having well-determined values, positions, directions, and so on. In reality, all these parameters are subjected to random variations and detailed data on their statistical distributions are usually not available. 4. The notion of the RVE is often applied even without detailed analysis of its validity, simply using certain statistical moments like average values or variance to characterize the composite material.

All materials are heterogeneous if considered at a sufficiently low level. The selection of an appropriate level for consideration and observation of the structure of a given composite is important for the results and depends considerably on the aims of the investigation. At every level different objects appear and different processes are observed while others are neglected because they are out of scale. If the macro-level is considered, the composites are treated as homogeneous materials and all processes taking place at lower levels remain unknown.
